Sample task: Writing Task 2From Practice Test 1

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic:

Some people believe schools should devote more time to practical skills, such as repairing everyday objects or managing a household budget. Others think that theoretical academic subjects should remain the main priority.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

In the practice test, a word count updates as you write. After you submit, compare your essay with a model answer and its review notes.

What each practice test includes

Every test has all four IELTS Academic sections, with the official format and time limits. Take one section at a time, in any order.

Listening

Four recordings play in order under a 30-minute timer. You can pause the recording and the timer together. Answers are marked when you submit, and the transcripts open afterwards.

30 minutes4 parts · 40 questions

Reading

Three passages under a 60-minute timer. Answers are marked when you submit, and the review shows each question next to its passage, with a filter for the ones you got wrong.

60 minutes3 passages · 40 questions

Writing

Academic Task 1 and Task 2 with a live word count. After you submit, compare your response with a model answer and its practice review notes.

60 minutes2 tasks · 150 + 250 words

Speaking

A timed rehearsal of all three parts, including one minute to prepare and two minutes to talk in Part 2. Keep notes and a short reflection after each attempt.

11–14 minutes3 parts · spoken responses

Seven study chapters

Learn how each section works and how to approach every question type, with worked examples. Chapters open after sign-in, next to the exam guide and tips for all four skills.

Analytics across attempts

For Listening and Reading, follow your latest, best and average raw scores, your score trend and the question types you find hardest, weakest first.

What this practice does not do

  • Raw Listening and Reading marks are not converted into predicted IELTS band scores.

  • Writing is not scored. You compare your response with a model answer and its practice review notes.

  • Speaking practice does not record audio or give a band score.

  • The practice tests are Academic. The chapters also cover General Training Writing Task 1.

  • These are original TuttoPrep practice tests, not official IELTS papers.

IELTS practice: common questions

Is TuttoPrep’s IELTS practice free?

Yes, during open beta. Sign in with Google to use all four practice tests, the study chapters, the exam guide and the tips. No card is required. See the pricing page for regular prices.

Are these official IELTS tests?

No. They are original TuttoPrep practice tests that follow the IELTS Academic format, section lengths and question types. TuttoPrep is not affiliated with the British Council, IDP IELTS or Cambridge University Press & Assessment.

Will I get an IELTS band score?

No. Listening and Reading are marked, and you see your raw mark out of 40 with accuracy by question type. TuttoPrep does not convert raw marks into predicted bands, and Writing and Speaking are not scored.

Is it for IELTS Academic or General Training?

The four practice tests are IELTS Academic. The study chapters cover both tests, with separate chapters for Academic and General Training Writing Task 1.

Can I pause a test and come back later?

Yes. Your answers and remaining time are saved to your account as you work, so you can pause a section and continue later on the same or another device. Submitted attempts are kept, so retakes build a history.
